Rebecca Ann Mello. Born May 11, 1975, Pasadena, died of respiratory failure October 8, 2008, Pasadena. A woman of vibrant, joyful spirit, life continually tested her strength and courage with medical challenges and personal tragedies. Becca weathered them all until her body gave in, but her spirit never did. She confronted a list of illnesses not often endured by one single human being, and lost her parents, Paul and Lisa, too early. In the face of difficulty, Becca graduated from Pasadena City College and was two courses short of her bachelor's degree from Cal State LA. She worked at various jobs, finding a path to the future at the Altadena Public Library. She was accepted at Cal State San Jose School of Library and Information Science graduate program and was to begin in fall of 2008. She pursued art, music, and psychology. Rebecca had many plans and many hopes, and never stopped fighting for them. She grabbed onto life like she would never let go. Determinedly cheerful, she pursued fun and friendship. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and a hero to many. A beautiful, special girl, her hopes live on inside those who survive her: brother Matthew Mello and sister-in-law Missy; brother Andrew Mello; grandmother Betty Finnell; partner Heidi Mettler; uncles and aunts Mike and Katy Finnell, Scott Finnell, Al Hodgson, Anne Mello, Joe and Lynn Mello, Rita Mello and Mitchell Reichwein, Jane and Jason Reynolds; stepmother Lillian Guerinoni; stepsisters Lily Moya and Michelle Moya-Orozco; cousins Melissa Finnell, Erin Madigan, Steven, Kathryn and Alyson Mello, Brandon Reynolds; and many kind and faithful friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Michael Linsey, Vicki Palomino and Susan Burkhart and the rest of the staff of the Huntington Dialysis Unit in Pasadena for being there throughout the years and trials, as well as the Scripps Green Organ Transplant Unit in La Jolla for their efforts and care.
